About

Why these studies were written, and how they approach Scripture.

About these studies

These papers began as personal study notes: questioning things I had been taught and testing them against Scripture.

The series asks a simple question with large consequences: what is a person, and what happens when we die? It works through the spirit, the soul and the meaning of “forever” one step at a time. Each step starts from the Bible’s own words in the original Hebrew and Greek, before later translation, philosophy and tradition were added to them.

The studies are written to be worked through, not just read. Scripture passages are set out in full, followed by questions and discussion points, so they can be used for personal study or with a small group.

How the studies approach Scripture

  • Let the Bible define its own words, in the order they appear.
  • Test every teaching against the whole of Scripture, not a single verse taken alone.
  • Be careful with ideas that came from Greek philosophy rather than from the Hebrew Scriptures.
  • Question what we are taught, and correct one another with Scripture and in love.

More to come

This is a growing series. Further papers will be added as they are completed, including a study of creation in Genesis 1.
